On World Poetry Day we are thrilled to put a spotlight on Ayana Farooq, our young donor and supporter who has written this beautiful poem in support of vulnerable girls her age. She is only 16 and inspires us with her generosity. She has donated half of her earnings from her poetry business to provide scholarships to vulnerable girls.

A HUNDRED DOLLAR BILL

I have been forever zipped inside deep pockets
Inside trendy jeans
Inside woven wools
In Italian silk
Spent on cars
And bars
And cigars
Until a gentle hand caressed my smooth thin polymer
I went a long way
Swept in the rolling sand dunes of Rajasthan
I met a girl with eyes that gleamed promise I morphed into food that fed her starved body
I became books that fed her mind
I turned into hope that fed her heart
I was the tinder that enlarged the fire in her warrior soul
I bought something priceless
A child's dream

This year on International Women’s Day, iPartner India honours and acknowledges the contribution of women from our project Rakshan in Rajasthan. They are the unsung sheroes of their local communities who are breaking barriers and fighting against age-old traditions to give girls from extremely resource-poor communities a chance to go to school and reassert their rights in their communities.

Here’s another champion of women and girls from iPartner India’s project Rakshan in Rajasthan. Bhawani Kanwar works as a Block Coordinator for Rakshan. She was selected as a finalist in the Women Exemplar Award, 2023.

Bhawani works closely with adolescent girls and children and her work has had a tremendous impact at the grassroots level. Bhawani is a fearless woman who drives around the project areas on her motorcycle. One cannot but be impressed when one meets and speaks to Bhawani as she speaks with such passion about her work and backs it up with diligence and hard work on the ground.

During meetings at Bal Panchayat (children’s parliament), Youth Groups, and Self Help Groups, Bhawani always makes it a point to stress on the importance of education and gender equality and raises awareness on Sexual and Reproductive Health.

Recently, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) team came to visit the field area and had interactions with Bhawani and her teammates for two days. The CII team was impressed and acknowledged the efforts undertaken by Bhawani to impact the lives of adolescent girls and children.

“Mein apni life ko apne tareeke se jeeti hun” (I live my life on my own terms) says Bhawani who is now a role model for adolescent girls in her village. The girls in her village look up to her and aspire to live independent lives.

A big shoutout to Bhawani, may her tribe increase, and may she continue to inspire girls to become independent, strong and fearless like her. Proud of you and the work you do Bhawani.

Bhawani is an inspiring figure and a role model for the girls in the villages. She is a familiar and welcome presence on her motorcycle, championing the cause of vulnerable girls. We are proud to be associated with her and all the strong and empowered women of iPartner India

When women are empowered, we can achieve gender equality, reduce poverty and make the world a better place for everyone.

In first of our series, meet Seema Madhiwal, a resident of Malpura in Rajasthan. For the past four years, she has been championing a cause to stop forced sex work among adolescent girls in her village.

Seema is a shining star in her village and her work is being recognized not just in her village but also in other states. She was recently invited to Kolkata to attend a ‘Leadership Next Programme’ to share learnings from her experience on her work on Anti-Trafficking. To attend the seminar, Seema took her maiden flight, the first amongst her peers. She was hesitant at first to take the flight but after seeing other participants from Rajasthan she felt more at ease. She also met with other participants from Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal where she learned and reflected on the work done by others in different states. The leadership seminar was an eye-opener for Seema where the interactions with various participants helped her to learn new things. She got the opportunity to share a presentation where she spoke with confidence and pride about the work being carried out in Rajasthan.

When Seema joined iPartner India’s project, she was shy and would often cover her face while speaking in front of her male colleagues. Today, Seema is a role model for many young women and girls in her village. She took a bold stand to raise awareness on gender equality and prevented many girls from entering into forced sex work.

Thank you, Seema, for your deep commitment and conviction to give girls an opportunity from your community to pursue education and for inspiring them to rise up and live their dreams.
